A few weeks ago I looked back at the four manuscripts I’d finished and realized I’d developed quite a pattern. All four of my completed stories feature mysterious portals or gateways to other planets or realms or realities. Granted, two of the stories are part of an on-going series (kicked off with RULING EDEN), but the other two are in no way related to that initial universe. I never intended to thread this similarity through my work.
Okay, I told myself. Maybe you have a thing for these gates. For a fantasy writer, that’s not too strange. I’m not alone in writing stories involving portals to other dimensions. I’m in good company, in fact. But what attracts us to this concept? The idea that we can walk through a gate and begin a brand new adventure, leave behind our mundane lives. Behind a gate is a brand new story. They are transition points that demark what we are used to experiencing from something new. They set boundaries. Some folks want to stay locked behind their gates, secure in familiar territory. Others want to pick the lock or scramble over the top to run toward the different.
Each time we open a book (or a file on our computer if we’ve purchased an e-copy) we open a portal. The imagery in my novels is only one explicit example of something the reader has already done.
So, cut to the chase. I’ve decided to feature pictures of a variety of gates or portals or anything that could loosely fit into that description here on my website. Do you have a favorite or at least interesting pic of one? Send it to me at email@example.com and I’ll post it here. I might even gear up into contest mode soon as the release of RULING EDEN approaches and challenge blog readers to send me short stories or interesting captions for these pictures. The best submissions will win prizes, of course.
So stay tuned for more images of gates and contest details. More important, think about the moments or places or situations that have been the gateways in your lives. I’d love to hear from readers about what gates symbolize for them, so feel free to leave a comment.
